Gisborne is located on the sunny East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand, the first city in the world to see the sun rise each day. The Maori name for the district is Tairawhiti which means ‘The coast upon which the sun shines across the water’.
Gisborne sits at the north end of Poverty Bay. The white cliff headland of Young Nick’s Head at the other end of the bay is visible from the city. Captain Cook first set foot in the region in 1769 and this white cliff was the first part of New Zealand sighted by the crew of his ship Endeavour. It was named after the crew member who first saw it.
Gisborne has warm summers and mild winters and is one of the sunniest places in New Zealand. Temperatures of 38°C have been recorded and an average 65 days a year have a maximum of over 24°C. A great place to holiday. The city is very close to the white sand beaches of Waikanae and Midway and just a short distance away is the surf beach of Wainui.
