Places to Stay in Papatowai
In the heart of the wildlife-rich Catlins district of South Island, is the peaceful settlement of Papatowai. The village, situated roughly half-way between the cities of Dunedin and Invercargill, is home to only around 30 permanent residents, but their numbers are boosted during the summer months, when visitors flock to holiday homes, especially over New Year and Easter, to enjoy the stunning beaches.
Papatowai is close to the mouth of the Tahakopa River on the Pacific coast and is surrounded by native podocarp forest. The area is noted for its excellent fishing and boating as well as a good spot for walking. There are numerous walks to choose from, taking in picturesque waterfalls, sandy beaches and native bush. The Department of Conservation recommends a couple of easy routes for families, one takes visitors to an archaeological site where it is possible to see middens left by early Maori inhabitants. In the past, the bones of moa have also been found here.
